NHTSA's Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over Campaign Aims to Reduce Impaired Driving Fatalities

As the Labor Day holiday approaches, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is partnering with local law enforcement agencies across the country to crack down on impaired driving through the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign. Running from August 16 through September 2, this high-visibility enforcement effort aims to prevent tragedies associated with impaired driving during one of the busiest travel periods of the year. NHTSA’s campaign highlights the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and underscores the importance of planning ahead to ensure a safe and sober ride home.

Labor Day weekend has become notorious for impaired driving incidents, with alcohol-related crashes and fatalities surging during this time. According to NHTSA data, during the 2022 Labor Day holiday period, 490 people lost their lives in traffic crashes nationwide, and nearly 40% of these fatalities involved a drunk driver. Alarmingly, a quarter of those fatalities involved drivers with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) nearly double the legal limit. This tragic loss of life serves as a stark reminder of the severe consequences of impaired driving.

The risk extends beyond alcohol. While many people mistakenly believe that marijuana use does not affect their driving ability, studies have shown that marijuana, like other drugs, impairs reaction time, cognitive performance, and the ability to maintain lane position. Driving under the influence of any substance is not only dangerous but also illegal in all 50 states. Law enforcement agencies are committed to detecting and arresting impaired drivers to keep the roads safe for everyone.

NHTSA’s regional administrator, Susan DeCourcy, emphasizes that the primary goal of the campaign is to protect the community and prevent senseless behavior that can lead to devastating consequences. “We want our community members to understand that it’s our first priority to keep people safe, so we’re asking everyone to plan for a sober ride if they know they’ll be out drinking,” DeCourcy said. “The Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign is an awareness effort to help drivers understand that impaired driving is illegal, and it takes lives.”

The message is clear: if you plan to drink, arrange for a sober ride. Don’t wait until you’re impaired to figure out how to get home safely. Impairment clouds judgment, making it more difficult to make responsible decisions. Whether it’s securing a designated driver, calling a taxi, or using a rideshare app, planning ahead is key to ensuring the safety of yourself and others on the road.

How People Are Harmed and Injured by Impaired Driving

The consequences of impaired driving are often catastrophic. Impaired drivers have slowed reaction times, impaired cognitive functions, and decreased motor skills, all of which significantly increase the likelihood of causing a crash. Victims of these accidents often suffer severe injuries, including broken bones, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, internal organ damage, and in the most tragic cases, loss of life. Survivors may be left with long-term physical and emotional scars, enduring pain and suffering that can last a lifetime.

For those injured in an impaired driving accident, the aftermath can be overwhelming. Medical bills, rehabilitation costs, lost wages, and other financial burdens quickly pile up. Victims often find themselves struggling to recover physically, emotionally, and financially.

Filing a Lawsuit and the Importance of Legal Representation

If you or a loved one has been injured in an accident caused by an impaired driver, you may be entitled to seek compensation for your injuries and losses through a personal injury lawsuit. However, the legal process can be complex and daunting, particularly when dealing with insurance companies and attempting to prove liability.

An experienced attorney can guide you through each step of the process, from gathering evidence to negotiating with insurance companies to litigating in court if necessary. Your attorney will work to build a strong case on your behalf, ensuring that your rights are protected and that you receive the compensation you deserve. This compensation may cover medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other damages resulting from the accident.

Having legal representation is critical, as insurance companies often try to minimize payouts or shift blame to the victim. An attorney will advocate on your behalf, ensuring that you are treated fairly throughout the process and that you receive the maximum compensation available under the law.

Compensation in a Hit-by-Vehicle Lawsuit

In a product liability or personal injury lawsuit resulting from a drunk or impaired driving accident, the compensation awarded can vary depending on the circumstances of the case. Victims may be able to recover damages for:

  • Medical Expenses: This includes past and future medical bills for treatment related to the accident, including hospital stays, surgeries, medications, rehabilitation, and ongoing care.
  • Lost Wages: If the victim is unable to work due to their injuries, they may be entitled to compensation for lost income, as well as future earning potential if their ability to work has been permanently impacted.
  • Pain and Suffering: Victims may be compensated for the physical pain, emotional distress, and mental anguish caused by the accident and their injuries.
  • Property Damage: Compensation may be awarded for the repair or replacement of damaged property, such as the victim’s vehicle.
  • Punitive Damages: In cases where the at-fault driver’s behavior was particularly reckless or egregious, the court may award punitive damages to punish the wrongdoer and deter similar conduct in the future.
