The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a stern warning to consumers regarding the immediate cessation of usage of Tuladuo Water Bead Sets. These sets, comprising large water beads, have been found to contain elevated levels of acrylamide, a violation of the Federal Hazardous Substances Act. The ingestion of these large water beads poses a significant risk of toxicity, particularly to children, potentially leading to adverse health consequences.
In a notable incident, a one-year-old child necessitated surgical intervention to remove a large Tuladuo water bead after ingestion. The ingestion of such beads can result in their expansion within the body, leading to severe discomfort, vomiting, dehydration, intestinal blockages, or even life-threatening injuries, often necessitating surgical removal.
These Tuladuo Water Bead sets were predominantly distributed via online platform Amazon.com from March 2021 to November 2023, with prices ranging from $10 to $20, by Tuladuo US and Dohuan US. Despite CPSC’s efforts, neither Tuladuo US nor Dohuan US, both situated in China, have cooperated with recall requests. Consumers who have purchased these sets will be directly notified of the hazard.
The warning pertains to two variations of Tuladuo Water Bead sets. One set comprises a plastic container containing 50,000 small water beads, along with 50 large water beads in a plastic bag, a plastic scooper spoon, two plastic funnels, four plastic spatulas, a mesh bag, and five beige balloons. These sets may come packaged in a blue cardboard box, prominently featuring the “Tuladuo” branding in red.
Another variant of the Tuladuo Water Bead set includes 50,000 small water beads, 50 large water beads in a plastic bag, 12 ocean animal toys, eight cups, a funnel, seven tools/tweezers, 10 balloons, and an inflatable mat, all housed within a clear plastic bin.
The large water beads are available in nine distinct colors, including red, orange, yellow, green, blue, pink, purple, white, and clear, while the small water beads are offered in seven colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, black, and clear.
In light of these findings, CPSC strongly advises consumers to discontinue the use of Tuladuo Water Bead Sets immediately and to dispose of the product in a safe manner, such as in the trash. Any incidents involving injury or product defects are encouraged to be reported to CPSC via www.SaferProducts.gov.
Individual Commissioners may provide further statements on this matter. For additional information or statements, please visit www.cpsc.gov/commissioners.
