Massive Cantaloupe Recall in Multiple States Due to Salmonella Contamination Risks
In a crucial proactive measure, thousands of whole cantaloupes distributed across 19 states and Washington, D.C., have been subjected to a recall following concerns over potential contamination by salmonella, as announced by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This initiative comes in the wake of a voluntary recall by Eagle Produce, the Scottsdale, Arizona-based company responsible for the distribution of the cantaloupes.
The FDA, through rigorous examination in a distribution center, identified the potential health threat, leading to the recall of 6,456 cases of whole cantaloupe. This fruit, under scrutiny for possible salmonella contamination, had been disseminated between September 5 and September 16 across a myriad of states including but not limited to California, Indiana, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin.
The recall primarily concerns Kandy Produce whole cantaloupes, identifiable by the UPC number code 4050 and specific lot codes 797901, 797900, and 804918. The FDA has issued a strong advisory for consumers who have purchased these products, urging them to avoid consumption and dispose of them immediately. As the symptoms of salmonella, ranging from diarrhea and fever to stomach cramps, can manifest anywhere from six hours to six days post-infection and may persist for four to seven days, immediate medical consultation is recommended for those experiencing adverse effects after consumption of the product.
The swift action by Eagle Produce and the FDA is crucial, considering salmonella bacteria are responsible for approximately 1.35 million infections, 26,500 hospitalizations, and 420 fatalities in the United States annually.
