General Motors (GM) has issued a recall for over 40,000 medium-duty pickup trucks due to a risk of fire sparked by a brake fluid leak.

The recall pertains to 2019 and subsequent models of Chevrolet Silverado, as reported by The Associated Press.

The US Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) informed GM via a letter that the brake pressure sensor assembly could potentially leak fluid onto the brake pressure switch, leading to a short circuit. This short circuit could result in overheating and subsequently trigger a fire, whether the vehicle is in motion or stationary.

In the same correspondence, the NHTSA advised truck owners to park their vehicles outdoors and at a safe distance from any structures until the necessary repairs are completed.

The recall encompasses approximately 40,428 vehicles, specifically the 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD models manufactured from 2019 to 2023, as per the AP.

Owners of the recalled trucks can reach out to Chevrolet customer service for assistance, according to the NHTSA. They can expect to receive mailed letters notifying them about the recall in the upcoming month.

The recall has been designated the number N222375270 by GM.

What is an Auto Recall?

An auto recall is a safety action taken by a car manufacturer when it determines that a specific model (or models) of vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal safety standard. This defect could potentially put drivers, passengers, and others on the road at risk.

Once the manufacturer identifies a safety concern, it is obligated to inform the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the United States, or the equivalent organization in other countries. The manufacturer also must notify owners of the affected vehicles, usually by mail.

An auto recall notice will typically provide information about the nature of the defect, the risk or hazard it poses, potential warning signs, and how to resolve the issue. This usually involves scheduling an appointment with a local dealer who will repair the defect free of charge.

Recalls can cover a wide range of issues, from minor problems that can be fixed quickly, to more severe concerns that require extensive repair or even replacement of the vehicle. These recalls aim to ensure the safety of the vehicle’s occupants and to maintain the integrity of the vehicle’s performance.
