National Plaintiffs’ Law Firm Investigating Injury Claims Caused by Diabetes Drugs
Parker Waichman LLP, a plaintiffs’ personal injury law firm based in New York with a nationwide practice, is seeking clients who suffered injuries from taking Gliflozin diabetes drugs. The firm is investigating incidents where diabetes patients suffered an amputation or another injury due to side effects of which the Gliflozin drug manufacturer failed to warn its customers.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning in May of 2017 stating that Gliflozin drugs can cause conditions in the patient’s lower extremities that require amputation of the limb. Most of the amputations involve a single toe or multiple toes, mid-foot, below the ankle, and below the knee. The pharmaceutical companies who manufacture Gliflozin drugs like Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, Astra Zeneca, and Bristol-Myers Squibb and a joint venture between Boehringer Ingelheim and Eli Lilly failed to warn their customers that amputation was a possible side effect from taking the drug. This failure to inform has caused people who took Gliflozin drugs and suffered injuries to file lawsuits seeking financial compensation for their damages.
Amputations from Taking Gliflozins
Gliflozins are a class of drugs marketed to treat Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and are in the family of medicines called sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors. SGLT2 is a protein that helps the kidneys absorbs glucose in the blood. SGLT2 inhibitors reduce blood sugar in Type-2 diabetics by helping the kidneys extract the blood sugar from the blood and expel it through the urinary tract. Therefore, an SGLT2 inhibitor helps the kidneys block absorption of all of the glucose into the body. The presence of the SGLT2 inhibitor blocks some of the blood sugar from returning into the blood after the blood passes through the kidneys. Instead, the rejected glucose leaves the body through urine.
The class of Gliflozin drugs includes three different medicines. The generic names for these drugs are canagliflozin, dapagliflozin, and empagliflozin. However, you might recognize these medications by their brand names: Invokana, Jardiance, or Farxiga.
In May of 2017, the FDA announced that canagliflozin (brand name Invokana), manufactured by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, increased the risk of amputation of the lower limbs. Consequently, the FDA required Janssen to provide a “Black Box Warning”, the FDA’s most prominent warning, on the Invokana line of drugs’ packaging and information materials, including not only Invokana but also Invokamet and Invokamet XR. The Black Box Warning informs those taking these drugs that the Invokana line of medications can cause amputations.
All Gliflozin drugs come with the potential for hazardous side effects. Other potential side effects from taking Gliflozins, no matter which brand, are ketoacidosis, or a state of having excess acid in the blood, dangerously low blood pressure, urinary tract infections, and broken bones, to name a few. These side effects can lead to serious health complications or even death.
Why You Need an Experienced and Tenacious Gliflozin Lawyer
Having the right lawyer to represent you in your Gliflozin lawsuit can make the difference between successfully prosecuting your claim or receiving nothing for the loss of your limb, the economic damages you suffered, and your pain and suffering. Lawyers with a track record of successfully pursuing damages for their clients against major pharmaceutical companies are absolutely necessary. Janssen, AstraZeneca, Bristol-Myers Squibb, and other Gliflozin manufacturers are powerful corporations with nearly unlimited resources and prominent law firms to represent them.
Not every lawyer has the capacity to stand toe-to-toe with these companies. Parker Waichman LLP’s Gliflozin lawsuit lawyers have the track record of success and aggressively and tenaciously pursuing damages on behalf of their clients against these drug companies.
Questions to Ask a Gliflozin Lawyer
Properly inquiring into the attorney who will bear the honor and responsibility of representing you is essential to find the right attorney for you and your family. Consider asking the following questions when you are considering a lawyer:
- Have you or your law firm handled complex litigation cases before?
- What resources do you have to match those of the pharmaceutical company?
- Is there a time limit for me to bring a lawsuit?
- How will I pay for your services?
- What are the expenses you might have and how do I pay for them?
- Will you keep me informed about my claim?
- How much could I recover?
- Do you or does your law firm have a documented record of success?
- Will you or your law firm handle my case from beginning to end or will you try to settle it and then refer me to another firm for trial if settlement negotiations are unsuccessful?
Qualifications You Need for a Gliflozin Lawsuit
The law firm you choose to represent you should be qualified to do so. Not every firm has the ability to take on large, wealthy, and influential drug manufacturers, or a documented record of success and compensation collected on behalf of their clients. You should consider whether the firm has earned any awards bestowed by the legal community. That will give you an idea about the quality of the representation you should expect and the nature of the lawyers who will work on your case.
