Man Receives Knee Replacements and Loses A Leg Due to Infection

Knee replacements are common, but they carry risks such as infection. A man who had both knees replaced developed a severe infection, leading to leg amputation. He is suing his healthcare providers and the manufacturer of the Bair Hugger, a device used during surgery, alleging it caused the infection. The Bair Hugger warms patients during surgery and is used in many hospitals. Over 4,000 patients claim it led to infections. Legal actions are being pursued for compensation related to these infections.

Knee replacements are relatively common and have been for quite some time now. Many people whose knees have become painful and limit their mobility opt for the surgery and many of them go on to recover fully and be physically active for years. Knee replacement places patients at risk of infection, just like all surgeries do. According to a report from Cincinnati.com, a man who had both knees replaced developed an infection in one leg that was so serious that amputation of that leg was necessary to prevent his death.

The man is pursuing legal action against his health care providers for their role in the loss of his leg to infection. He is also suing the maker of a medical device that was used during his knee replacement procedure which may have introduced the infection into his body. The medical device that may have caused the infection is the Bair Hugger. It is a device used in approximately eight out of every ten American hospitals. Over four thousand patients, including the man who lost his leg to infection after his knee replacement, allege that the use of that product during joint-replacement procedures caused life-threatening infections.

The Bair Hugger consists of a unit that sits on the floor and filters air, warms it, and forces it through disposable blankets that cover patients before, during and after surgery. The Bair Hugger is designed to keep the patient’s core temperature stable during operation. Many patients who undergo surgery experience a drop in core body temperature. The blanket component of the Bair Hugger is disposable because giving each patient a fresh blanket should reduce the chance that an infection would be transferred from one patient to another. The blankets are not designed to enter sterile areas during surgery. Please visit the following page for more information about Blair Hugger Lawsuits.
