Platinum Health Recalls Portable Bed Rails Over Entrapment and Asphyxia Hazards, with Reported Death

Platinum Health LLC, based in Orlando, Florida, is recalling about 53,000 adult portable bed rails under the LumaRail brand, according to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The bed rails pose a risk of entrapment and asphyxia, as users can get stuck inside the rail or between the rail and the mattress. Platinum Health received a report of a death linked to the recalled Bed Assist Rail with Legs (model PHB4000) after an 81-year-old nursing home patient in Pennsylvania tragically died from positional asphyxia in October 2021.
The recall affects three models of bed rails: the Free Standing Bed Assist Rail (model PHB6000), Bed Assist Rail with Legs (model PHB4000), and the DoubleSafe Bed Assist Rail (model PHB7000D). The recalled bed rails are described as having white metal tubing, a black or gray foam rubber grip handle, and a black fabric pouch. The band name “Platinum Health” can be found on a label placed on the grip handle or the leg of the bed rail. The recalled bed rails also have a light mount that can be found underneath the grip handle.
The recalled bed rails were sold on Platinum Health’s website, PlatinumHealthLLC.com, major online retailers such as Amazon, Walmart.com, eBay, and Overstock, and online medical supply stores nationwide, including Fabrication Enterprises and RehabMart. The bed rails were available for purchase from July 2015 to December 2022 at prices ranging from $65 to $100.
Consumers who have purchased the recalled bed rails should immediately stop using them and contact Platinum Health for a free repair kit. Those who use model PHB7000D on twin beds will receive a free replacement bed rail that is redesigned to fit properly. CPSC is urging consumers to report any related incidents to the agency via www.SaferProducts.gov.

How to Pursue Compensation for Harm Caused by These Recalled Bed Rails
When a person is harmed or experiences damages due to a defective or dangerous product, they may have grounds for a product liability lawsuit. In this type of legal claim, the plaintiff seeks compensation from the manufacturer, distributor, or retailer of the product for injuries or damages suffered. To succeed in such a lawsuit, the plaintiff must prove that the product they used was defective or unreasonably dangerous and that this defect or danger caused their injuries or damages. Compensation sought may include medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other related damages. While product liability laws vary by jurisdiction, manufacturers generally have a legal obligation to ensure that their products are safe for use and to warn users of potential dangers associated with the product. If you have suffered harm due to a defective or dangerous product, contact a qualified product liability attorney to discuss your legal options.
