Large-scale Recall of Pressure Cookers after Multiple Burn Reports

Sensio has initiated a recall of multiple electric and stovetop pressure cooker models after they were linked to 61 instances of burn injuries, as highlighted by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
The main concern revolves around the cooker’s lid. It appears that the lid can prematurely unlock and detach during cooking, leading to hot contents spilling out and potentially causing burns to unsuspecting users.
The CPSC detailed that among the reported injuries were significant second- and third-degree burns, affecting various body parts such as the face, chest, arms, and hands.
The affected pressure cooker models span several brands, including Bella, Bella Pro Series, Crux, and Cooks. The recalled items comprise electric pressure cookers in 6-, 8-, and 10-quart sizes, along with stovetop versions in 5-, 8-, and 12-quart capacities.

Injuries and Damages Caused By the Recalled Pressure Cookers
Pressure cookers are highly beneficial kitchen appliances designed to cook food quickly using high-pressure steam. However, if manufactured improperly or used incorrectly, they can pose significant dangers. Sensio’s recent recall of numerous pressure cooker models due to safety concerns underscores the potential hazards that can arise from faulty kitchen appliances.
Burn Injuries: The primary hazard reported with the recalled pressure cookers was burn injuries. Given that the defective lid could unlock and be removed during cooking, there was a risk of hot contents erupting out. Burns can range in severity:
- First-degree burns: Affect only the outer layer of the skin, causing redness and pain.
- Second-degree burns: Extend to the second layer of the skin, causing blisters and a thicker appearance.
- Third-degree burns: Penetrate the deepest layers of skin, possibly damaging underlying tissues like muscles, tendons, and bones.
Scalding Injuries: Apart from direct burns from the cooker’s surface, the sudden release of steam or hot liquids can cause scalding injuries, especially if the spill is extensive.
Eye and Face Injuries: If the lid suddenly releases while a user is peering over the cooker, there is a risk of hot liquid or steam causing injuries to the eyes or face.
Slip and Fall Accidents: Spills from the faulty pressure cooker can create wet and slippery surfaces, leading to potential slip and fall accidents, especially in kitchens where surfaces are hard and unforgiving.
Property Damage: Apart from personal injuries, the unexpected release of hot contents can cause damage to countertops, floors, cabinetry, and other nearby appliances.
Psychological Trauma: Beyond the physical injuries, such traumatic incidents can leave victims with psychological scars, leading to anxiety, fear of using kitchen appliances, or even post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in severe cases.
It’s crucial for consumers to be aware of recalls and potential hazards associated with products they own. While manufacturers bear the responsibility for ensuring the safety of their products, consumers should always exercise caution, regularly check for recalls, and follow all safety guidelines when using kitchen appliances. If injured due to a faulty product, seeking medical attention immediately followed by legal consultation can ensure the victim’s rights are protected.
