Shimano has recalled 680,000 bicycle cranksets in the U.S. and 80,000 in Canada due to a crash risk from potential separation of bonded parts. Legal recourse is available for affected individuals through product liability lawsuits.

Popular bicycle component manufacturer, Shimano, has recently issued a massive recall that concerns many cyclists. At the center of this recall are the 11-Speed Bonded Hollowtech II Road Cranksets. The recall became imperative after it was discovered that these bonded crank parts could separate and break, posing a severe crash risk to the riders.

Dated September 21, 2023, the recall covers an enormous 680,000 units sold in the United States, with an additional 80,000 in Canada. The specific models involved in this recall include Shimano Ultegra FC-6800, Dura-Ace FC-9000, Ultegra FC-R8000, Dura-Ace FC-R9100, and FC-R9100P. These models, produced before July 2019, are not only sold individually but are also a component on bicycles from manufacturers such as Trek and Specialized. For those unsure if their crankset falls under this recall, they can look for ‘Ultegra’ or ‘Dura Ace’ logos on the arm and check for specific two-letter production codes on the backside of the crank arm.

For those affected, Shimano advises an immediate cessation of using the cranksets made before July 1, 2019. It’s vital to get them inspected at an authorized Shimano dealer, where any affected units showing signs of bonding separation will be replaced and installed free of charge. This recall comes on the heels of an alarming 4,519 incidents reported concerning crankset separation, which resulted in six severe injuries, including fractures, joint displacements, and lacerations.

Sold between January 2012 and August 2023, the cranksets were priced between $270 and $1,500 and distributed by Shimano North America Bicycle Inc., based in Irvine, California. All units were manufactured in Japan.

Legal Recourse for Victims of Defective Products

When consumers purchase products, especially those related to transportation or sports, they expect a certain degree of safety and reliability. When these expectations are shattered due to manufacturing defects, the aftermath can be catastrophic, leading to accidents with injuries, financial setbacks, and even permanent disabilities.

Victims of such defects have the right to pursue legal remedies. In situations where a product has caused harm, a product liability lawsuit can be initiated. Such a lawsuit can compensate victims for medical bills, loss of wages, emotional distress, and even punitive damages in cases where the manufacturer’s negligence was glaring.

However, navigating the legal waters of product liability can be complex. The process often involves collecting evidence, understanding the nuances of the law, negotiating with big corporations, and possibly going to trial. An attorney with experience in product liability can be instrumental in such cases. They can guide victims through the complexities, ensuring that their rights are protected and that they receive the compensation they rightfully deserve.
