Johnson & Johnson Under Legal Fire: ‘Euphoria’ Actor Angus Cloud’s Family Takes on Corporate Giant
The tragic demise of actor Angus Cloud’s father, Conor Joseph Hickey, has spurred a legal battle between the bereaved family and health conglomerate Johnson & Johnson. The Cloud family alleges that Hickey’s fatal condition, mesothelioma, was a direct consequence of using Johnson & Johnson’s talc-based baby powder for decades.
The lawsuit, initiated on October 4, accuses the multinational corporation of knowingly producing a harmful product and misleading the public about its potential risks. The product in question, which has since been discontinued, was reportedly used by Hickey from 1957 to 2023. The 65-year-old passed away in May due to complications arising from his stage 4 mesothelioma diagnosis, a condition known to result from asbestos inhalation. Tragically, shortly after Hickey’s passing, the family suffered another blow with the sudden and unrelated death of Angus Cloud.
Joseph Satterley, the family’s legal representative, expressed frustration and disdain for the company’s continued defense of its product. Satterley mentioned to People magazine, “Despite various juries and courts consistently ruling against them and identifying their product as carcinogenic, Johnson & Johnson persistently projects it as safe.”
It’s worth noting that Johnson & Johnson pledged last year to switch from talc to cornstarch in its baby powder formula. In a separate legal development, they also committed to a colossal $8.9 billion settlement, to be dispersed over a 25-year span, to tackle claims similar to those made by the Cloud family. This massive settlement addresses the grievances of over 40,000 plaintiffs, many of whom have likewise accused the company of neglecting the risks associated with its product.
In response to the lawsuit initiated by the Clouds, Clare Boyle, Director of Global Corporate Affairs at Johnson & Johnson, defended the company’s position by emphasizing the purported safety of cosmetic talc and its non-association with asbestos or cancer.
