Federal Warning Issued for Toos Electric Scooters Following Fatal Fire Incident
The safety and reliability of electric scooters have been thrust into the spotlight following an urgent federal directive cautioning users of the Toos Elite 60-volt electric scooters. The recommendation for immediate cessation of these scooters comes on the heels of a tragic fire that claimed the lives of two individuals, including a young child, in New York City.
Retailing under brand names like “Zooz” and “Toos” at Toos Urban Ride outlets in New York and online, these electric scooters have faced scrutiny after the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) revealed the grim details of the April mishap. Investigations carried out by fire officials attributed the inferno to a lithium-ion battery in the said scooter, raising eyebrows due to its non-certification by any accredited laboratory in line with the prevailing UL safety standards. Making matters even more concerning is the revelation that the scooter was being charged using a 48-volt charger from the same company. UL Solutions highlighted that these chargers were branded with unauthorized UL certification marks, another worrisome discrepancy. Despite the evident dangers posed by their product, Toos Urban Ride showed reluctance to collaborate with CPSC for a satisfactory recall procedure.
The alarming revelations concerning Toos electric scooters are part of a growing concern surrounding e-mobility devices. In less than a week from the dire warning regarding Toos scooters, CPSC disclosed a concerning increase in accidents related to e-scooters, hoverboards, and e-bikes, tallying up to a staggering 233 fatalities from 2017 to 2022. This worrying trend isn’t restricted to just Toos, as the agency also highlighted a recent recall by Future Motion, creators of the Onewheel electric skateboards, following four deaths connected to their product.
