In the early hours of a recent Tuesday morning in Bushwick, Brooklyn, an intense blaze threatened the lives of several residents. Originating from an apartment on Menahan Street, the fire swiftly consumed the victims’ apartments. According to the ABC7NY news report, five fire victims found themselves entrapped inside their apartments, gasping for breath amidst dense, black smoke – a common occurrence during lithium-ion battery fires. Fortunately, firefighters were able to rescue two individuals from a second-floor window. Another victim owed their escape to firefighters’ who quick navigated the interior stairs. However, the danger wasn’t limited to just this apartment. The insidious smoke had seeped its way to the 7th floor, necessitating the evacuation of two more victims.
The news report stated that two adults were listed in critical condition. Another victim was deemed serious, while two children, thankfully, suffered only non-life-threatening injuries. FDNY Chief Kevin Woods recounted the daunting experience, noting the thick black smoke’s challenge, which is a direct result of lithium-ion battery combustion.
Evidence from the scene corroborated the initial suspicions. An e-bike and its accompanying lithium-ion batteries – the very culprits behind this disaster – were identified. Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh seized the opportunity to reiterate her previous pleas to online retail giants like Amazon, urging the sale of only compliant and safe lithium-ion batteries. Her concerns aren’t unfounded. This year alone, there have been 216 fires traced back to lithium-ion batteries, resulting in 120 injuries and 14 fatalities.
