Volvo Recalls 100,000 Vehicles Due to Faulty Brakes Causing Accidents

Volvo is recalling over 127,000 vehicles due to a diagnostic error in the brake control module 2 (BCM2) affecting the brake-by-wire systems in 2023 models. This issue can impair the antilock brake system, traction control, and electronic stability control, increasing crash risk. Affected models include the 2023 Volvo C40, S60, S90, V60, V60 Cross Country, V90 Cross Country, XC40, XC60, V90, and XC90. Volvo is offering a free over-the-air software update to fix the problem, with notification letters sent by March 15, 2023.

According to a safety report posted on thestreet.com, auto manufacturer Volvo, it will release an over-the-air software update to fix a dangerous issue affecting certain vehicles’ braking systems. Although the repair will be performed by an over-the-air software update, Volvo will have to issue a recall to satisfy certain federal regulations. The recall will impact more than 127,000 motor vehicles. The recall announcement states that the recall affects the brake-by-wire systems. Volvo stated that it was not aware of any accidents caused by the defect affecting its 2023 models.

The recall announcement, filed with the National Highway Safety Administration, states that a diagnostic error in the brake control module 2 (BCM2) can induce a failure of the antilock brake system, traction control system, and electronic stability control system. This braking system recall involves the following 2023 Volvo models: C40, S60, S90, V60, V60 Cross Country, V90 Cross Country, XC40, XC60, V90, and XC90 models.

Volvo’s recall filing states that affected owners could experience a stiff brake pedal and a potential loss of brake system functions, including ABS, ESC, brake-by-wire, traction control, pilot assist, ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control), and OPD (One pedal drive). Volvo also reminded affected owners that the active safety and city safety functions are defined in the user manuals.

The NHTSA filing stated that a reduction in brake support functions would increase the chance of being involved in a motor vehicle crash. Volvo stated that it received the first incident report pointing to the braking issues at the beginning of October 2022, and then the carmaker received another complaint recently. The incident reports are increasing, which has led the NHTSA to launch an investigation that will review customer complaints and find the common root cause. That investigation was escalated last month, and the issue was deemed critical.

Volvo announced that it was releasing the over-the-air BCM2 software update at no cost to affected owners. All affected owners will receive recall notification letters around March 15, 2023. All affected Volvo owners may also contact Volvo Car customer service and mention recall number R10217.
