Woom Bikes USA is initiating a recall of its Original models due to concerns regarding the stem and handlebar, which have the potential to detach. The recall affects approximately 84,000 bikes in the United States, with an additional 533 units sold in Canada. The recall was initiated on July 6, 2023.

According to reports, there have been 77 incidents in the U.S. where the handlebar stem detached or loosened, resulting in 19 injuries involving bruising, cuts, or abrasions. No incidents have been reported in Canada.

The recall encompasses all sizes of Woom’s Original 2018-2021 models, featuring stems with one silver bolt clamping onto the steerer tube. These bikes are designed for children aged 18 months to 14 years and were available in seven versions: Woom 1, Woom 1 Plus, Woom 2, Woom 3, Woom 4, Woom 5, and Woom 6.

The Woom 1 and Woom 1 PLUS models are balance bikes, while Woom 2 through 6 are pedal bikes. The bikes were sold in various colors, including red, green, blue, purple, and yellow. They display the word “woom” in white letters on the downtube, as well as in metallic letters on the headtube. Additional markings include the “#woombikes” in black letters on the chainstay and the wheel size in black on the sides of the fork.

Consumers are urged to immediately stop using the recalled bicycles and contact woom Bikes USA to obtain a free repair kit. The company is reaching out directly to all known purchasers.

The bikes were sold through woom.com, amazon.com, and bike stores nationwide from September 2018 through March 2022, at prices ranging from $200 to $530. Manufacturing of the bikes took place in Cambodia and Vietnam, as indicated in the Canadian recall notice.

In a lawsuit concerning the Woom Bikes USA recall of the Original models due to stem and handlebar concerns, if a child is injured as a result of the defective bike, the child’s parent or guardian may be able to seek various types of damages. The potential injuries that a parent could recover in a lawsuit include:

  1. Medical Expenses: If the child sustains injuries due to the stem and handlebar detachment, the parent can seek compensation for all medical expenses incurred. This includes hospital bills, surgeries, doctor visits, medication, physical therapy, and any other necessary medical treatments.
  2. Pain and Suffering: The parent may be eligible to recover damages for the physical pain and emotional suffering experienced by the child as a result of the injuries. This includes compensation for both the immediate pain and any long-term or chronic pain endured by the child.
  3. Emotional Distress: Severe injuries can have a significant emotional impact on a child, leading to trauma, anxiety, depression, or other psychological distress. The parent may seek damages for the child’s emotional distress and the resulting effects on their overall well-being.
  4. Loss of Enjoyment of Life: If the child’s injuries impact their ability to engage in activities they once enjoyed or result in a diminished quality of life, the parent may be able to seek compensation for the loss of enjoyment of life experienced by their child.
  5. Future Medical Expenses: In cases where the child’s injuries require ongoing medical care, rehabilitation, or therapy, the parent can seek compensation for anticipated future medical expenses. This includes the cost of any future surgeries, therapies, medications, or assistive devices needed by the child.
  6. Educational Impact: If the injuries affect the child’s ability to attend school or participate fully in their education, the parent may seek damages for the educational impact and any additional support or resources required to address the child’s needs.
  7. Other Damages: Depending on the specific circumstances of the case, there may be additional damages that the parent can pursue, such as lost wages if the parent had to take time off work to care for the injured child or incurred travel expenses for medical appointments.

It is still early in the process for me and I have been kept abreast of matters effecting my case by Jillian, my case manager and Cathy, my paralegal. One aspect of the firm that I had not anticipated was the care and concern shown for my well being by Joanne, the nurse. PARKER WAICHMAN LLC is my law firm and I am glad I contacted them to work on my case. Update: Denny Tang, Esq., handled my case with updates to me throughout the process. He appears genuinely caring about his clients and that quality is priceless. Jillian Cantinieri, Legal Secretary, was initially my go to contact at the firm and performed her duties in a stellar manner. She is an exemplary employee and I am very pleased Jill was assigned to my case.
