Ultrasound Contrast Anaphylaxis Wrongful Death Lawsuit Lawyers
Fatal Allergic Reactions Linked to Ultrasound Contrast Agent Containing Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) Definity, Definity RT, Lumason, and Bracco’s Lumason.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has published a new warning to ultrasound imaging technicians, healthcare professionals, doctors, and providers concerning fatal allergic reactions to certain ultrasound contrast agents. According to the FDA’s warning letter, the following brands of ultrasound contrast have been reported to cause instant allergic reactions causing anaphylaxis and death in many instances.
- Definity,
- Definity RT,
- Lumason, and
- Bracco’s Lumason (its room-temperature formulation).
The FDA warned healthcare professionals that the ultrasound contrast agents Definity, Definity RT, and Lumason contain a chemical called polyethylene glycol (PEG), which is a polyether compound derived from petroleum that some patients have an immediate hypersensitivity reaction leading to anaphylaxis and death. According to the FDA’s letter, the agency is aware of at least 11 reports of acute anaphylaxis. The FDA’s warning letter to healthcare providers also affirms that two patients passed away after they were administered ultrasound contrast containing polyethylene glycol (PEG).
The FDA cautions against administering Definity, Definity RT, Lumason, or Bracco’s Lumason to patients with either a suspected allergy or a known allergy to polyethylene glycol (PEG). The FDA requires that all product labeling and instructions be updated with the risk of anaphylaxis or death due to polyethylene glycol (PEG) allergy or hypersensitivity. The new contraindication will also be added to the prescribing information for Definity, Definity RT, Lumason, and Bracco’s Lumason ultrasound contrasts.
Ultrasound technicians and healthcare providers are urged to clinically evaluate their patients’ health history to confirm that their patients do not have a known allergy or hypersensitivity to polyethylene glycol (PEG) before giving the following ultrasound contrasts: Definity, Definity RT, Lumason, and Bracco’s Lumason. It is also important to understand that some ultrasound patients may not know that they have a hypersensitivity or allergy to polyethylene glycol (PEG).
Ultrasound professionals are urged to speak with their patients about the risk of polyethylene glycol hypersensitivity or allergic reactions. One way to ascertain if a patient has an allergy to polyethylene glycol is to ask the patient if they are allergic to common PEG-containing products such as laxatives or colonoscopy bowel preparations. And finally, the FDA is urging ultrasound clinics to keep certified cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) personnel on standby and to have Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) equipment readily available before administrating an ultrasound contrast agent. Ultrasonic providers should observe their patients for signs of a hypersensitivity reaction if using an ultrasound contrast agent that contains polyethylene glycol (PEG).

HOW TO KNOW IF YOU HAVE A CLAIM
The method of ascertaining if your loved one or your family qualifies for monetary compensation following medical malpractice or harm caused by a defective or mislabeled product requires a thorough fact-finding investigation. It is essential in a personal injury or wrongful death case to find and show a causation link between the ultrasound contrast agent and the patient’s anaphylaxis or fatality.
Parker Waichman LLP can perform this exhaustive investigation on your behalf. Whether our national plaintiff’s law firm can take your case or not, you will not be charged any money for this “fact-finding” investigation of your claim. If we can accept your case, there is still a chance that your claim against the manufactures of ultrasound contrast agents may be unsuccessful. Our legal team can thoroughly examine your medical records, interview your treating physicians, and help you understand your legal options.
TIME TO FILE A WRONGFUL DEATH LAWSUIT IS LIMITED BY THE STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS
Every state has a unique set of time deadlines in which you must file your lawsuit to collect monetary damages. This deadline is written into state law, called the statute of limitations. If the statute of limitations has passed on your case, you will not be able to file a lawsuit seeking financial compensation for the loss of a loved one.
