Mirena IUD Uterine Perforation

The Mirena IUD has been linked to uterine perforation in approximately 2 out of 1,000 users, a serious complication that may require emergency surgery. This condition can lead to infertility, infection, and other severe health issues. Allegations suggest Bayer downplayed these risks. Symptoms include abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, and fever. Women with a history of certain surgeries or who are breastfeeding are at higher risk. Legal assistance is available for affected individuals through Parker Waichman LLP, offering free evaluations for potential compensation claims.

Mirena IUD

2 in 1,000 Women Suffered Mirena IUD Uterine Perforation. Did you suffer a uterine perforation following placement of the Mirena IUD (intrauterine device)? It is estimated that 2 in 1,000 women who use the Mirena IUD and similar devices have suffered a uterine perforation. Mirena uterine perforation is a serious, life-threatening complication that often requires emergency surgery to correct. This potential Mirena complication can lead to infertility, infection, hemorrhage and sepsis.

It has been alleged that Bayer’s Mirena claims have been misleading, and downplayed serious side effects associated with the IUD, including the risk of uterine perforation. If you or a woman you know suffered this dangerous Mirena side effect, you may be entitled to compensation for your pain and suffering.

The Mirena side effect lawyers at Parker Waichman LLP are offering free lawsuit evaluations to victims of Mirena uterine perforations or other IUD complications. To ensure your legal rights are protected, we urge you to contact a Mirena side effect lawyer at Parker Waichman LLP today.

What is Mirena IUD Uterine Perforation?

A uterine perforation is an accidental puncture of the uterus that can occur with any intrauterine procedure, including IUD placement. Bayer has estimated that this occurs in approximately one per 1,000 – 10,000 ‘Mirena IUD’ insertions. However, Mirena uterine perforations can also occur when the device migrates from its proper position.

After the Mirena IUD punctures the uterus, it can even migrate, or become “lost,” in the abdominal cavity and potentially puncture the bladder, intestines or bowel. Breastfeeding women are at higher risk for perforation of the uterus during insertion of any IUD, including Mirena, and should be carefully monitored.

Women who have had past abortions, C-sections, or other surgeries of the cervix also have an increased risk for uterine perforation.

Mirena Uterine Perforation Symptoms

Because uterine perforation is a potentially life-threatening ‘Mirena IUD’ complication, it is important that any woman implanted with this contraceptive device recognize the symptoms and warning signs that could indicate that Mirena has peforated the uterus.

These warning signs include:

  • Lower abdominal pain
  • Heavy vaginal bleeding
  • Inability to locate the ‘Mirena IUD’ string
  • Bloating, rigidity and pain in the abdomen
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Chills
  • Fever
  • Rapid heartbeat

Complications Associated with Mirena IUD Uterine Perforation

Mirena IUD recipients who experience any of the above symptoms should contact their medical provider immediately.
If the uterus is perforated by Mirena, it may no longer prevent pregnancy. Once Mirena has punctured the uterus, it may migrate outside the uterus. Untreated, Mirena uterine perforation can lead to serious complications, some of which have the potential to be life-threatening, including:

  • Damage to other organs, including intestines, bladder and bowel
  • Infection
  • Infertility
  • Need for hysterectomy
  • Adhesions and scarring
  • Intestinal obstruction
  • Sepsis

Diagnosis, Surgery, and Treatment of Mirena IUD Uterine Perforation

If your doctor believes your Mirena IUD may have perforated your uterus, an ultrasound will be ordered to confirm the diagnosis. Blood tests may also be performed to detect the presence of infection. Treatment for a perforated uterus usually involves surgery to remove the Mirena IUD and repair the uterine puncture.

Any other organs damaged by a migrated Mirena IUD will also need to be repaired, and antibiotics will be administered to prevent or treat infection.
