Pradaxa Lawsuit Lawyers

Pradaxa, a blood-thinning medication approved in 2010, has been linked to serious bleeding side effects, including internal bleeding, gastrointestinal and cerebral hemorrhaging, and death. By late 2011, 260 deaths were reported worldwide due to these side effects. Unlike warfarin, Pradaxa has no antidote, making its bleeding events more dangerous. Pradaxa Bleeding Side Effects Reports

Manufactured by Boehringer Ingelheim, ‘Pradaxa’ was approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in October 2010 to prevent blood clots and strokes in people with atrial fibrillation. ‘Pradaxa’, part of a class of drugs known as Direct Thrombin Inhibitors, has been touted as an improvement over warfarin, a blood thinner that has been widely used for years.

Since its U.S. approval, ‘Pradaxa’ has been the subject of an increasing number of Pradaxa bleeding side effect reports. In late 2011, Boehringer Ingleheim acknowledged that between March 2008 and October 31, 2011, it had received 260 reports worldwide of deaths related to Pradaxa bleeding side effects. In August 2011, after 81 elderly ‘Pradaxa’ patients, including 5 who died, suffered serious bleeding events in Japan, regulators in that country ordered Boehringer to warn doctors about dangerous bleeding side effects. Just months later, in October 2011, European regulators recommended that new information be added to the Pradaxa because of reports of bleeding side effects that were fatal. Finally, in December 2011, the FDA announced it was evaluating post-marketing reports of serious bleeding side effects in patients taking Pradaxa.

While warfarin also poses a risk of serious bleeding events, warfarin bleeding can be treated with vitamin K. However, there is no antidote for ‘Pradaxa’ bleeding side effects, other than discontinuing the drug. As a result, Pradaxa bleeding side effects are extremely dangerous and should be reported to a doctor immediately. Symptoms of ‘Pradaxa’ side effects include:

  • Lethargy and fatigue
  • Unusual bruising or bleeding / hemorrhaging
  • Pink or brown urine
  • Red or black tarry stools
  • Coughing up blood
  • Vomiting that resembles blood or looks like coffee grounds
  • Bleeding from the gums
  • Frequent nosebleeds
  • Joint pain or swelling
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Weakness and swelling of the arms, hands, feet, ankles or lower legs
  • Menstrual or vaginal bleeding that is heavier than normal

No Antidote For Pradaxa Bleeding

‘Pradaxa’ was brought to market with great fanfare, with its maker touting it as being safer than traditional blood thinners, like warfarin (brand names Coumadin, Jantoven and Marfarin). And it is true that ‘Pradaxa’ will not react with certain foods the way warfarin will to increase the likelyhood of bleeding events. However, warfarin bleeding can be stopped via the administration of vitamin K. There is no antidote for ‘Pradaxa’ bleeding at this time, making ‘Pradaxa’ bleeding events potentially far more deadly.
