FDA and Georgia Public Health Authorities Urge Consumers to Avoid Recalled Products
The Georgia Department of Public Health has reported that at least 20 individuals in the state have fallen ill after consuming Diamond Shruumz microdosing candies, with eight requiring hospitalization and three placed on breathing machines. The recalled Diamond Shruumz products have been linked to severe health risks, including hallucinations, seizures, and respiratory failure, prompting an urgent public health warning.
The Diamond Shruumz recall, initiated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), highlights the potential dangers of unregulated dietary supplements. These candies, marketed as herbal dietary supplements for pain relief and inflammation reduction, were found to contain undisclosed psychoactive substances. Researchers at the University of Virginia (UVA) Health discovered that the products contained muscimol, a psychoactive compound, and psilocin, a Schedule I controlled substance, neither of which were listed as ingredients.
The FDA’s investigation has expanded nationwide, with 74 cases under scrutiny, including 38 hospitalizations and two deaths. Despite the recall, Diamond Shruumz products were reportedly still available for purchase at certain smoke and vape shops, as well as online. The recall aims to prevent further health risks by removing these products from circulation and warning consumers against their use.

Consumers who ingested Diamond Shruumz candies experienced a range of adverse effects, some of which were life-threatening. Symptoms included hallucinations, uncontrolled movements, abnormal heart rates, high or low blood pressure, and severe gastrointestinal distress. The presence of muscimol and psilocin in these candies led to serious neurological effects, including seizures and loss of consciousness. The potential for respiratory failure, as evidenced by three cases requiring mechanical ventilation, underscores the severity of the risks posed by these contaminated products.
