Good Earth Lighting’s Rechargeable Integrated Lights Recalled Following Consumer Death and Multiple Fires

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a significant recall for more than 1.2 million rechargeable lights manufactured by Good Earth Lighting. This recall follows a tragic incident where a consumer lost their life, and several fires were reported, highlighting serious safety concerns.

Good Earth Lighting’s Rechargeable Integrated Lights, produced in Cambodia and China, have been found to overheat and ignite their plastic housing, posing fire and burn hazards. The CPSC’s decision came after a consumer died and another was treated for smoke inhalation due to a fire caused by these lights. The company has acknowledged nine additional reports of overheating, six of which resulted in fires and property damage.

Good Earth Lighting stated that they prioritize consumer trust and ensure their products meet all safety standards. Despite only ten incidents out of 1.2 million units sold, they chose to voluntarily recall the lights in partnership with the CPSC out of caution. They removed the affected lights from sale in January 2024.

The recalled lights were available at various hardware and home improvement stores across the nation, including Lowe’s, Ace Hardware, Meijer, and Menards, as well as online platforms like Amazon.com and QVC. Sold between October 2017 and January 2024, the lights cost approximately $20 for a single unit and $35 for a bundle.

The recall specifically affects model numbers starting with RE1122, RE1145, RE1362, and RE1250. These lithium-ion battery-powered lights were designed as alternatives to wired fixtures for spaces like closets, cupboards, and staircases. Measuring about 12 inches in length, they were available in multiple colors, including white, silver, almond, black, and rose gold, with various accessories such as charging cables, remote controls, and power adapters.

Consumers who own these lights are urged to immediately unplug and stop using them. Good Earth Lighting is offering a free replacement light bar for affected consumers who complete a form provided by the company.

How People Are Harmed and Injured by the Product

The hazards associated with Good Earth Lighting’s Rechargeable Integrated Lights are profound. These lights have a defect that causes them to overheat, leading to potential fires. Such incidents can cause significant physical harm, including burns and smoke inhalation. The tragic death of one consumer underscores the severe risks these defective lights pose. Fires not only result in bodily harm but also property damage, displacing families and causing financial distress.

Victims of such dangerous products have the right to seek justice through product liability lawsuits. Filing a lawsuit involves several steps, starting with gathering evidence and proving that the product was defective and directly caused harm. The lawsuit process includes the filing of a complaint, discovery, negotiations, and potentially a trial. Each step requires meticulous attention to detail and a thorough understanding of legal procedures, which is why having an attorney is crucial.

A skilled attorney will help establish the product’s defect, whether due to design, manufacturing, or inadequate warnings. They will navigate the complex legal landscape, handle negotiations with the company’s legal team, and advocate for the victim’s rights in court if necessary. Legal representation ensures that victims are not shortchanged and receive fair compensation.

Damages Recoverable in a Product Liability Lawsuit

In product liability cases, victims can recover various damages. These include economic damages like medical expenses, lost wages, and property damage costs. Non-economic damages for pain and suffering, emotional distress, and loss of enjoyment of life can also be claimed. In severe cases, punitive damages may be awarded to punish the company and deter future negligence.

Pursuing a product liability claim without legal assistance is challenging. Attorneys bring expertise and resources to build a strong case, ensuring victims receive the compensation they deserve. They handle all legal complexities, allowing victims to focus on recovery.
