REI Recalls Co-op Cycles REV Children’s Bicycles with Training Wheels Due to Fall and Injury Hazards

Recreational Equipment Inc. (REI) has issued a recall for its Co-op Cycles REV children’s bicycles, specifically those equipped with training wheels. The recall, announced on June 27, 2024, affects approximately 75,860 units sold between March 2022 and May 2024. The affected models include 12-, 16-, and 20-inch bikes with serial numbers beginning with “ET22,” “ET23,” “01VX,” or “07VX.” The primary hazard is that the training wheel assembly knob can loosen and detach from the bicycle, posing significant fall and injury risks to young riders.

The Dangers Posed by Defective Training Wheels

The primary danger associated with the recalled bicycles is the potential for the training wheels to detach while the bicycle is in use. This can lead to unexpected falls, causing injuries such as scrapes, bruises, and even more severe harm like broken bones. REI has reported receiving four such incidents, including one where a child suffered broken arms. The risk of injury is particularly concerning given that these bicycles are designed for young children who may not have the skills to safely handle such malfunctions.

Parents and guardians who have purchased these bicycles should take immediate action to prevent accidents. If the training wheels are still being used, it is crucial to stop using the bicycle and contact an REI store to schedule a free repair. REI is offering replacement training wheel attachments and repair kits for those who cannot visit a store. For bicycles being ridden without training wheels, they can continue to be used safely.

The Legal Implications and Recourse for Victims

When a product designed for children fails and causes injury, the legal implications can be significant. Parents of injured children may have the right to file a product liability lawsuit against the manufacturer. Such lawsuits aim to hold the company accountable for the safety of its products and to seek compensation for the damages suffered by the victims.

The process of filing a product liability lawsuit involves several key steps. First, it is essential to establish that the product was defective and that the defect directly caused the injury. This typically requires gathering evidence, such as medical records, eyewitness accounts, and documentation of the product’s purchase and use. An experienced attorney can help compile this evidence and build a strong case.

Why Legal Representation is Essential

Navigating a product liability lawsuit can be complex and challenging, particularly for families already dealing with the aftermath of an injury. Securing an attorney with experience in product liability cases is crucial. An attorney can manage all aspects of the legal process, from filing the necessary paperwork to negotiating settlements and representing the victim in court if necessary.

Legal representation ensures that the victim’s rights are protected and increases the likelihood of securing fair compensation. Damages recovered in a product liability lawsuit can include medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages (for parents needing to take time off work to care for their injured child), and, in some cases, punitive damages aimed at deterring future negligence by the manufacturer.

The Types of Damages Victims Can Recover

In a product liability lawsuit, the types of damages that can be recovered are typically categorized into economic and non-economic damages. Economic damages cover quantifiable losses such as medical bills, rehabilitation costs, and any future medical expenses related to the injury. They also include lost wages if a parent or guardian had to take time off work.

Non-economic damages address more subjective losses, such as pain and suffering, emotional distress, and loss of enjoyment of life. In some cases, if the manufacturer’s conduct was particularly egregious, punitive damages might be awarded to punish the manufacturer and deter similar behavior in the future.
