Steamed Bun Recall in 27 States Due to Life-Threatening Allergen Risk

Prime Foods Processing Issues Urgent Warning Over Undeclared Sesame in Egg Custard Steamed Buns

Prime Foods Processing, a Brooklyn-based company, has initiated a recall of its Egg Custard Steamed Buns across 27 states after discovering that the product may contain undeclared sesame, a life-threatening allergen for many individuals. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the recall, which involves 477 cases of the product distributed between May 30, 2024, and June 28, 2024. The recall affects two specific products: Steam Buns with Egg Custard Added (Item #PD4180) and Steam Buns with Egg Custard and Coconut Added (Item #PD4190), bearing lot codes #24149 and #24150 with an expiration date of October 2025.

The FDA has classified sesame as one of the nine major allergens, alongside wheat, milk, tree nuts, peanuts, soy, eggs, crustaceans, and fish. Food manufacturers are legally obligated to clearly label these allergens on all products. In this case, an internal review by Prime Foods revealed that six cases of sesame-steamed buns were mistakenly packaged as egg custard steamed buns, leading to the risk of allergic reactions among unsuspecting consumers.

The products were distributed through grocery stores in states including Arizona, California, Florida, Illinois, New York, Texas, and Virginia, among others. The recall has been initiated as a precautionary measure, even though no consumer complaints or illnesses have been reported as of August 9, 2024. Prime Foods has identified a temporary breakdown in its packaging process as the cause of the issue and has since corrected it.

The Dangers of Undeclared Allergens

The presence of undeclared allergens in food products poses a serious health risk to consumers. For individuals with sesame allergies, exposure to even trace amounts can lead to severe allergic reactions. Symptoms can range from mild to life-threatening and may include rashes, hives, itching, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and swelling of the throat and vocal cords. In the most severe cases, anaphylaxis can occur, a rapid and potentially fatal reaction that requires immediate medical attention.

The recall underscores the importance of strict adherence to food labeling laws and the need for rigorous quality control processes in food manufacturing. Undeclared allergens are a leading cause of food recalls and can have devastating consequences for consumers who rely on accurate labeling to avoid dangerous reactions. The situation with Prime Foods highlights the critical role of both manufacturers and regulators in ensuring food safety.

Legal Recourse for Affected Consumers

Victims who suffer harm due to undeclared allergens in food products may have grounds to file a product liability lawsuit against the manufacturer. In this case, individuals who have experienced an allergic reaction after consuming the recalled steamed buns could seek compensation for their injuries. This compensation may cover medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other related damages.

Filing a lawsuit involves several steps, starting with gathering evidence such as medical records, proof of purchase, and the recalled product itself. An attorney specializing in product liability can help victims navigate the legal process, ensuring that their rights are protected and that they receive the compensation they deserve.

Given the complexities involved in product liability cases, it is crucial for victims to secure experienced legal representation. An attorney can guide them through each step of the process, from filing the initial claim to negotiating settlements or representing them in court. This legal support is essential in holding manufacturers accountable for their products and ensuring that victims are fairly compensated for their suffering.

In cases involving severe allergic reactions, the damages recovered can be significant, reflecting the impact on the victim’s health, quality of life, and financial stability. An attorney can help quantify these damages and advocate for the maximum possible compensation.
