March 18, 2023 – Ford announces a recall affecting 98,550 units of the 2004-2006 Ranger pickup trucks, as the passenger airbags in these vehicles were improperly installed after a series of previous recalls. This heightens the injury risk in an accident if the airbag fails to inflate.
When a collision occurs, the front passenger airbag is designed to inflate rapidly, protecting the occupant from striking the dashboard or windshield.
In the impacted vehicles, the airbag inflator – responsible for activating the airbag – was incorrectly installed after multiple Takata airbag recalls.
The airbag may not deploy during a collision, raising the risk of injury.
Ford issued a Ranger recall in December 2017 due to deteriorating airbags manufactured by Takata. In 2018, the company recalled additional vehicles with inflators also at risk of rupturing.
By November 2022, Ford began investigating the repairs after receiving reports of improperly installed replacement airbag inflators, leading to the current recall.
Authorized dealers will reinstall the front passenger airbag inflator at no cost to the customer. Ford will provide reimbursements to owners who have already paid for repairs prior to the official recall announcement.
Owners of recalled motor vehicles will be notified by March 31, 2023.
