According to a recent article posted on TheGuardian.com, sixty new lawsuits have been filed against L’Oréal and other companies. The lawsuits allege that L’Oréal and other beauty product manufacturers marketed chemical hair relaxer products to African American women, and those hair products caused Uterine cancer and other severe health issues. The lawsuit complaints also accuse the beauty companies of knowing their products contained dangerous chemicals.
An order from the U.S. judicial panel on multidistrict litigation, some of the sixty cases will be consolidated in a Chicago federal court. Many other hair relaxer uterine cancer lawsuits have been filed in federal courts throughout the United States. The court records state that these products use dangerous chemicals to straighten textured hair permanently. The lawsuits accuse L’Oréal and the other companies named in the lawsuits of knowing their products contained harmful chemicals but deciding to sell those products anyway.
The hair relaxer uterine cancer cases name L’Oréal SA, Dabur International Ltd. Representatives, and Godrej SON Holdings Inc subsidiaries as defendants. These companies opposed the centralization of the lawsuits. L’Oréal posted an online statement saying it is “confident in the safety of our products and believe the recent lawsuits filed against us have no legal merit.” The other defendants have not released public statements concerning the lawsuits.
The hair relaxer uterine lawsuits were filed after a National Institutes of Health study discovered that women who used the chemical hair straightening products several “times a year were more than twice as likely to develop uterine cancer.” Study leader Alexandra White with the U.S. National Institute of Environmental Health Safety stated that the study found that about 1.65% of women who never used a chemical hair straightener product would later develop uterine cancer by age 70, but frequent users had their risk increase up to 4.05%.”
Uterine cancer is one of the most common types of gynecologic cancer in the United States, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC is now seeing the rates of uterine cancer rise, especially among African American women.
