According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), American Honda Motor Company topped the list of car manufacturers with the most vehicles affected by federal recalls in 2023. Honda had approximately 6.3 million vehicles potentially affected by various recalls, closely followed by Ford, which had around 6.1 million vehicles potentially impacted.
In terms of the number of recalls issued, Ford led with a total of 58 recalls, representing 16% of all recalls issued in 2023. Chrysler followed with 45 recalls. These recalls encompassed a wide range of issues, including parts of vehicles, entire vehicles, compliance with emissions standards, environmental regulations, and software or technological glitches.
Other manufacturers featuring prominently in the top ten list for most-impacted brands include General Motors, Chrysler, BMW, and Nissan.
Here are the top 10 carmakers by the number of vehicles potentially affected by recalls in the U.S., according to NHTSA data:
- Honda: 6,334,825 vehicles
- Ford: 6,152,614 vehicles
- Kia America: 3,110,447 vehicles
- Chrysler: 2,732,398 vehicles
- General Motors: 2,021,033 vehicles
- Nissan North America: 1,804,443 vehicles
- Mercedes-Benz USA: 478,173 vehicles
- Volkswagen Group of America: 453,763 vehicles
- BMW of North America: 340,249 vehicles
- Daimler Trucks North America: 261,959 vehicles
The NHTSA data revealed that the top reasons for these recalls included issues with electrical systems, equipment, vehicle structure, powertrains, steering, airbags, exterior lighting, suspensions, hydraulic service brakes, and back over prevention systems.
A significant recall in late December involved Toyota Motors, which recalled one million vehicles in the U.S. due to a short circuit problem that could hinder airbag deployment, increasing injury risks in crashes. Other notable recall issues in 2023 included tire problems, child seat faults, and electrical system malfunctions, such as defective batteries, starters, or alternators.
Individuals who have been harmed or injured due to these recalled vehicles may have grounds for filing a lawsuit seeking damages. Such legal actions typically fall under product liability lawsuits, where plaintiffs must demonstrate that the vehicle was inherently dangerous due to a defect, design flaw, or lack of adequate warnings.
Navigating a product liability lawsuit involves a complex process, requiring expertise in gathering evidence, filing the lawsuit, negotiating settlements, and possibly going to trial. An attorney can provide invaluable assistance at each step, ensuring that victims’ rights are protected and their case is presented effectively.
